2024-2025 Winter Outlook

Author: Storm Impact

Winter is quickly approaching. Thanks to El Niño, the US had two mild winters in a row. Now that El Niño is gone and NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center is predicting a weak La Niña event to emerge, what should we expect? Below is Meteorologist Meghan Klee’s seasonal outlook for Winter 2024-2025.

StormImpact's 2024-2025 Winter Forecast

Generally, the forecast points to a cold and snowy winter in the Rockies and Pacific Northwest. Along the East Coast, especially in the Northeast, a mild and less snowy winter is forecast. December is an exception where some areas in the Mid-Atlantic and interior Northeast could see some cold shots and chances for snowstorms.  For the Southern Plains, Texas, and Southeast, a mild and drier-than-normal winter is expected. However, there are signals for some cold shots in December and February. The battle ground between a cold and mild winter exists in the Midwest where a mix of mild and cold months is likely. November and January look very mild but December and February could be cold and snowy.
